In August 2026, retail sales rebounded after two consecutive months of decline, recording a monthly increase of 0.3% in value and 0.1% in volume. This short-term recovery was propelled almost entirely by the food sector (+0.8% in value and +0.5% in volume), while non-food sales remained flat in value and slipped 0.1% in volume. Despite this monthly uptick, the broader June–August 2026 quarter reflected a widespread contraction across all categories, declining by 0.3% in value and 0.5% in volume compared to the prior period.

On an annual basis, retail sales rose 0.5% in value but dropped 1.0% in volume compared to August 2025, underscoring ongoing price pressures that dampened real purchasing activity across both food and non-food goods. Within non-food categories, trends diverged sharply: IT and telecommunications equipment led growth with a 6.7% increase, whereas footwear and leather goods suffered the steepest drop at -4.1%. Modern distribution formats drove the year-over-year gains, with online commerce outperforming all channels (+5.4% value, +3.6% volume) alongside moderate growth in large-scale retail (+1.1% value, +0.1% volume).
